Sheet metal brake wizardry: From coil to corner in 1:00 flat
Rich Wagner demonstrates how to bend an outside corner post for vinyl siding from standard aluminum coil stock.
The corner has perpendicular insets to accept the ends of the siding panels and a 4-in. x 4-in. 'post' which sits proud of the siding about 1/4-in.
Here's how to do it:
- Start with the finished side up, set the brake at about 3 in. in from the edge, and bend a 90 degree angle.
- Flip the sheet over and bend another 90 degree angle 3/4-in. from the first bend
- Hem the seam
- Create the 3/4-in siding pocket using the brake as a gauge.
- Push the metal further into the brake to complete the same sequence for the opposite side.
- Make the last fold. After the second 3/4-in. siding pocket is created, fold the inside corner in the center of the sheet metal.
