A Human Controlled Jobsite Robot

April 15, 2017

You get paid for what you do and what you know. If robots can do what you do, then it is time to know more.

A cross between an exoskeleton and a remote-controlled vehicle, the Guardian GT Big Arm allows a single construction worker to lift and position objects between 40 and 400 pounds anywhere within its workspace.

It can be controlled by a worker who rides on the back or remotely (from a lawn chair) via a fiber optic or RF link. Powered by a diesel engine, it can travel up to 4 miles per hour.

As robotic construction workers move on to jobsites, it will become increasingly important to broaden your skillset beyond what robotic carpenters or bricklayers can do. Learn how to drive this beast for starters.

According to a 2013 study by Oxford University, there is a 72% chance that carpenters will be replaced by robots, and 92% for cabinetmakers.
