Introduction

I'm Joe Ghiringhelli, president of Deck2wall. In this video, we'll examine water management and rot prevention at deck ledger connections.

Importance of proper ledger connections

Deck ledger connections must prevent water from becoming trapped between the ledger and the house. Trapped moisture can cause rot, which is costly to repair and often a contributing factor when a deck collapses.

Common installation failures

Flashing is typically installed over the ledger, but this system fails to manage the path of the water, trapping moisture and debris between the first deck board and the house. Once trapped, the water must filter its way down. This condition can corrode the flashing and can also divert water down the face of the ledger, accelerating corrosion of the joist hangers and their fasteners.

Effective solutions with Deck2wall spacers

Deck2wall spacers separate the ledger from the house, providing drainage and airflow.

Shown side-by-side, Deck2wall spacers demonstrate the fundamental difference in managing water compared to simply interrupting and blocking its path.

Deck2wall spacers are easy to install. Here’s an example of a typical bolted connection: temporarily attach the ledger in its desired location.

Installation process

Then, drill for your bolts.

Remove the ledger, center the spacers over the holes, and screw them to the ledger.

Apply sealant in and around the bolt holes to help prevent moisture intrusion. Now, secure the ledger with the bolts.

Product details and additional resources

Deck2wall spacers are available in two sizes and were tested with a variety of bolts, lags, and structural wood screws. For detailed instructions and more, visit decktowallspacer.com.
