Introduction to the Hilti ProKit system
What I have here today is Hilti's ProKit modular storage system. This is actually a really great system — I'm really impressed with what I'm seeing here. These are the first five initial pieces they're offering. I know they're late to the game, but I think that's okay, because you're going to be impressed with what you see. Check it out.
Starting with the trolley
The best place to start with the ProKit is the trolley. This is the heart of the system — it's how you get the mobility to take your tools where you need them to go. It's sort of like a dolly without the bottom platform. It comes with really nice large wheels that will allow you to get over rough terrain easily. It has a solid metal axle right here, so you know the inside is metal-reinforced. It can be really sturdy. You could load this thing up. Matter of fact, it'll hold up to 250 lbs of gear — that's a lot. Also, with the boxes stacked on it, you can go 7.5 feet tall, so you can fit a lot of material and tools in this thing.
The way the handle works is this: you have this black button right here. Pressing it releases the handle so you can extend it up and use it to move your tools around. When you don't need it, just press the button again, and the handle lowers back into its lowest position. On the back side, there's a metal piece that allows you to attach additional items if you need to. But what's really cool is the way it interfaces with their boxes — let me grab one and show you.
The extra-large case
This is their extra-large case. It holds 16 gallons and has a weight limit of 99 lbs, so you can really load this one up. It has pop-out handles on the sides and a large single latch on the front. That's going to be common across all the storage boxes — a single handle that opens the lid. If you notice, there's a nice heavy rubber gasket inside, so we do get an IP65 rating on these. Dust and water intrusion is really minimized, and the latch is nice and secure when it's closed. The hinge actually has a metal bar reinforcing it.
The reason for the metal bar ties directly into the trolley interface. On the trolley, we have these metal latches right here, so the interface is simply: bring your trolley up, click it in, and it latches right into place. As simple as that. Now I have the ability to just move this around wherever I need to. When I'm ready to release it, there's a button with a padlock logo — push that, and they come right apart. Simple as that.
The large case
So that extra-large would be your base — your starting point. You put that on the bottom and build up from there. The next size up is what they're calling the large case. This one has about a 9.25-gallon capacity and is rated to hold up to 75 lbs, so it holds quite a bit. It comes with a removable divider inside with little clips that allow you to position it where you need it and lock it in place. It's also compatible with Hilti's tool-locating system, so you can put a tracker inside and keep track of where your boxes are.
The latch system is the same single-point opening and closing, and again, there are metal bars on the back. Even though this case latches onto the stack, you can also hang it from the top of the trolley using the metal system up there — easy to pull off and move around independently.
Now, as far as boxes latching together, this is a feature I really like. Unlike some other systems where you have to slide pieces together or line everything up just right for them to click, this one is nesting. As soon as I get it close, it's locked together. I didn't have to worry about lining up pins or slide locks — very simple. To remove it, just push down, and it pops off. The way it works is there are locators on the back with a little catch on the edge that grabs into the box below, and on the front side, there are small latches incorporated with the lever. Drop it on, and it's in place. It's also self-centering, so it's hard to put it on incorrectly. And it's one-handed — once you push it down, it stays down until you release it. Very secure.
The medium case
So you have your extra-large, your large, and then we have the medium case. Same idea, just a little smaller. This one has a 5-gallon capacity and a 50-lb load limit — if you put 50 lbs into this, that's a lot of weight. Same latch system, except the latch is located right in the center. Put it on there, push down, and it's latched. Simple as that. You get a suitcase-style handle on this one so you can carry it vertically, or it has integrated handles on the sides so you can carry it level if you need to.
What's also nice is it clicks in both directions. If you have the case spun around and aren't stacking hinge-to-hinge, it still latches. It can go either way on either box — any box can stack any way.
The full-size organizer
And I have one last box to show you: their full-size organizer. I'd guess they'll probably offer a half-size version at some point, but what you get here is the same footprint as the medium case. Same center-latch opening system. You get 11 bins inside — they're nice and deep, so you can fit a lot of small parts in there. You can also remove all the bins if you don't need them, so you can configure it however you want.
One nice detail is that each bin is captured so that if you tip the organizer over, the contents of each bin stay in place. Looking through the transparent lid, you can see the grid that locks down the top of each bin to keep everything where it belongs. IP65 rated as well, so whatever you put in here stays free of dust and moisture. Same metal system on the back lets you hang it from the top of the trolley for easy access.
Stack everything on the trolley, and you'd be ready to head to work.
Pricing and warranty
As far as cost goes, it's not an inexpensive system by any means, but it actually came in reasonable compared to what I've seen from competitors. Here's the breakdown from top to bottom:
- Organizer: ~$73
- Medium case: ~$95
- Large case: ~$106
- Extra-large case: ~$137
- Trolley: ~$177
So altogether, you're looking at around $600 for a setup like this. What does that get you? With Hilti, you get one of the longest warranties on the market — 20 years on the product, a 2-year parts warranty, and a 1-day guaranteed repair turnaround. They call it the 20/2/1 warranty. These are currently available, so if you head to hilti.com, you can find them and configure the system for exactly what you need.
