Introduction
Hey guys, Sam with Arden Cabinet here, and today I'm going to go over a question I get asked frequently: How hard is it to install cabinets on your own? Well, today I'm going to show you in a six-step video. From there, you can decide whether it's something you can do or can't do.
Step 1: Mark layout and find studs (the foundation step most people skip)
Step one: Mark your layout. Use a level and a pencil to mark the top and bottom lines for your cabinets on the wall. Find and mark your studs. You'll need to anchor the cabinets into these for safety.
Step 2: Prep cabinets properly (doors off, plumbing holes cut)
Step two: Prep your cabinets. Remove doors and drawers so they're lighter and easier to handle. Measure and cut out holes for any plumbing fixtures. You will need a hole saw. Get started, and make sure to account for the cabinet overlay when you measure.
Step 3: Set and level base cabinets (pro shimming techniques)
Step three: Set the base cabinet in place. Keep checking for level. A small error now can make your countertop installation a nightmare later. Typically, in a kitchen install, we would start with the wall cabinet so you're not leaning over the base cabinet. However, we installed the base cabinet before the tower cabinet because we are still waiting for the countertops.
Step 4: Connect face frames with perfect alignment
Step four: Connect cabinets together. Clamp face frames tightly and secure with screws so you get a seamless, professional look. Use a long level to make sure the face of the cabinets align. Check for any gaps between the level and the face frame. If there are gaps, like you see here, use a shim to adjust. To account for an uneven wall, place shims where the studs are and screw them into the studs.
Step 5: Install wall cabinets safely and securely
Step five: Install wall cabinets. Mark the bottom of the cabinet and find and mark your studs. Screw the cabinet into the studs.
Step 6: Reattach doors & drawers
Step six: Reattach doors and drawers. Make final adjustments so everything lines up perfectly.
